EURO 2016: DELIGHT FOR COLEMAN AND GIVEN AS IRELAND EARN CRUCIAL WIN

first_imgSOCCER: There was delight for Donegal duo Shay Given and Seamus Coleman as they helped Ireland to a crucial win over Georgia at the Aviva Stadium tonight. It was a nervy night in Dublin as Ireland struggled to breakdown the resolute Georgia side in the first-half.They failed to create any chances of any note in the opening period and Martin O’Neill rung the changes at half-time. Ireland talisman and captain Robbie Keane was withdrawn at half-time and was replaced by Southampton FC striker Shane Long.Long’s pace and work-rate caused the Georgia defence problems and he has now staked a big claim for a regular starting place.Ireland toiled and James McCarthy wasted some glorious opportunities before Jon Walters struck the decisive goal.Wonderful play from Jeff Hendrick opened up the Georgian defence and his pull-back was toe-poked home by Walters. Seamus Coleman had an outstanding game and was always a great outlet for the Irish side going forward. He was ably assisted by Wes Hoolahan and Robbie Brady who enjoyed fine game for O’Neill’s side.Shay Given was rarely troubled but anything he had to do he did well and earned himself another clean sheet.Ireland are now FOUR points clear and look odds on to get a play-off spot to reach the European Championships in France next summer. EURO 2016: DELIGHT FOR COLEMAN AND GIVEN AS IRELAND EARN CRUCIAL WIN was last modified: September 7th, 2015 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:newsSportlast_img read more
