MLB wrap: Yankees sweep doubleheader as Red Sox team meeting not enough to halt losing streak

first_imgThe Yankees won the opener 9-2, behind a strong pitching performance from Domingo German — who allowed two runs in seven innings to run his record to 14-2 — and the bat of DJ LeMahieu.Almost an afterthought as an offseason free-agent acquisition, LeMahieu is now considered an MVP candidate. New York fans don’t have a vote, but they chanted “MVP!” at Yankee Stadium.WOW! DJ LeMahieu with his second home run today, #Yankees lead 7-1! #YANKSonYES pic.twitter.com/63Q2aKxOEo— YES Network (@YESNetwork) August 3, 2019Meanwhile, Red Sox ace Chris Sale’s perplexing struggles continued as he yielded eight earned runs in 3 2/3 innings, most of the damage coming in a seven-run fourth inning.Manager Alex Cora was ejected for arguing with home-plate umpire Mike Estabrook about pitch calls, and after being pulled, Sale also spoke his mind and was ejected. After losing their sixth straight in the opener, the frustrated Sox held a players-only meeting between the first and second games.“It was to get us back on track,” Mookie Betts said afterward (via the Boston Globe). “It was a group decision.”Sale added: “When things come up, you have to address it.”The team meeting didn’t help. The Yankees, behind a pair of home runs by shortstop Gleyber Torres, won the nightcap, 6-4, running Boston’s losing streak to seven games. The Yankees sweep didn’t come without a price — the team has lost the services of Edwin Encarnacion, who suffered a broken right wrist after being hit by a pitch in the first game. He is now the 15th Yankee on the injured list, and the team has had 25 players on the IL this season. It certainly hasn’t hurt them in the standings.Studs of the NightAaron Sanchez, making his debut in an Astros uniform, no-hit the Mariners through six innings, striking out six. The former Blue Jays star walked two batters and threw 92 pitches before giving way to the bullpen for the combined no-hitter in a 9-0 victory.Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler pitched a complete-game gem in a 4-1 win over the Padres, striking out 15 batters.Dud of the NightRoyals starter Danny Duffy gave up eight earned runs and four home runs in 4 2/3 innings in an 11-3 loss to the Twins.HighlightsRonald Acuña walks it off for the Braves in the 10th inning against the Reds. Saturday’s doubleheader offered a microcosm of many things that have gone right for the Yankees and wrong for the Red Sox this season.New York (71-39) swept the doubleheader to move eight games up on the second-place Rays and 13 1/2 ahead of third-place Boston. If the Red Sox entered this series still entertaining hopes of catching the Yankees … sorry, it’s time to refocus on a wild-card spot, and the defending World Series champions are now 59-54 and trail by 5 1/2 games in that race. Good ñight, everybody!#ChopOn pic.twitter.com/HVP9psUjPf— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) August 4, 2019Newly acquired Mets starter Marcus Stroman makes a great play to cut down speedy Starling Marte at home plate. An amazin’ play by Marcus Stroman!08/02/2019 #LFGM #Mets pic.twitter.com/Y2AVhh1PIc— 🍎 BIG APPLE METS ⚾️ (@BigAppleNYM) August 4, 2019What’s Next? Nationals (58-51) at Diamondbacks (54-56), 4:10 p.m. ET — The Nationals currently hold one of the National League’s wild-card spots, while the Diamondbacks are very much in the mix. Nationals left-hander Patrick Corbin (9-5, 3.23 ERA) has plenty of incentive in this matchup — he pitched for Arizona his first six MLB seasons before moving to Washington as a free agent last offseason. He’ll face Taylor Clarke, who has pitched extremely well his last two starts (11 1/3 innings, two earned runs, 13 strikeouts against the Yankees and Orioles).last_img read more
