The Texas Department of Public Safety will be ramping up their enforcement on roadways to encourage safe driving habits over Memorial Day Weekend.A DPS news release stated DPS troopers will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers, and drivers violating speed limit, seat belt and other traffic laws from Friday through Monday.“Memorial Day pays tribute to those who have given their lives to serve and protect our country, and what better way to honor them than to protect your fellow drivers by making safety a priority every time you get behind the wheel,” DPS Director Steven McCraw said in a statement.Last Memorial Day weekend, DPS troopers issued almost 60,000 citations and warnings, including more than 1,000 seat belt and child safety restraint tickets, the release detailed. The efforts also resulted in 372 DWI arrests, 251 fugitive arrests and 190 felony arrests.DPS lists several tips for drivers to enhance safety on the road this weekend.Don’t drink and drive.Slow down in bad weather, heavy traffic, construction zones and unfamiliar areas.Eliminate distractions while driving, including mobile devices.Buckle up everyone in the vehicle.Slow down or move over for vehicles stopped on the side of the road.Don’t drive fatigued.Report road hazards or anything suspicious to the nearest law enforcement agency.last_img read more
