The different fall sports associations asked the IHSAA for an extra week for their fall sports. What they wanted was a week added at the the end of the fall season. What they got was an extra week in August! I don’t think a lot of coaches are totally happy with this decision. What the coaches wanted was extra time so that their state series was not crammed up. For example, in volleyball the regional and semi-state were played in the same week. This also happened for several years in cross country. The problem with the IHSAA decision to begin a week earlier rather than extending it a week later is the problem of practicing in early to mid August when heat & humidity are at their highest.I am sure this decision was based on the administrator’s concern about running into the basketball season. Many basketball coaches feel their season is too long and would welcome one week shorter. We have to realize, though, that basketball is the top revenue source for most high schools in the state of Indiana. Many decisions are influenced by this fact. If I were still coaching, I would take the extra week for cross country, but I would not be real happy with the starting date.
